Somatic Tracking: How to Feel
The Essence of Somatic Tracking: Embracing Sensations
In somatic tracking, we are in a culture that tells us we should fix things, make them right, do something positive, hurry up, and get the pain away. In contrast, somatic tracking suggests the opposite. We want to allow the pain to be there.
Delving into the Sensation
So, say you have pain in the stomach. You would want to get curious, drop into the sensation, notice it, look, listen, and feel with any senses that come naturally to you. Begin to drop your awareness into the body, the sensation, and into the center of that sensation and pain.
Sometimes, you might feel an emptiness, especially if it's related to sensations of "freeze" (a term used when an experience was shocking and too much to process) or experiencing grief, which can manifest as a void rather than fullness. There's a wealth of knowledge to uncover. As you stay present, listen, sense, and feel, your attentiveness/presence actually aids in releasing stuck energy, pain, emotions, and beliefs linked to past events.
The magic lies in the fact that you don't even need to pinpoint what's been stressing you. It's a remarkable shortcut. In talk therapy, discussions might extend for hours about what transpired with a particular person. However, if you simply reflect on that person and the events and ask, "Where do I feel this in my body?" You might respond, "Well, I sense it here and somewhat lower." So, gravitate towards the lowest point, look, listen, feel, allow the sensation to linger exactly as it is and breathe.
In my interactions with clients, I often inquire, "How is it now?" They might relay, "Oh, I visualized a rainbow over it," or, "I did something to it." This isn't the moment to fix. It's the time to feel, to listen, to be curious, and to gain deeper insights into what affecting that particular part of you.
The Healing Process
As you maintain your presence, the energy begins to dissolve, disperse, and release. Along with it, the accumulated emotions, beliefs, and entrapped energy metabolize their way out. So, let's practice becoming more at ease with experiencing our emotions and sensations.
I wish you a great day.
